Play without putting your IP on show

Other players see a PremierVPN server, not your home connection. That makes you much harder to knock offline, gets around ISP throttling where it happens, and lets you reach game servers in other regions. WireGuard keeps the overhead low.

Why gamers use a VPN

What a VPN can and can't fix

A VPN is good at hiding your IP and your traffic. It isn't a magic ping button. Here's where it genuinely helps.

DDoS attacks

Anyone who learns your IP can try to flood your connection and knock you out of a match. Through PremierVPN, other players see our server's address, so an attack aimed at you lands on our server, not your home connection.

ISP throttling

Some ISPs slow certain kinds of traffic at busy times. With the VPN on, your ISP sees encrypted traffic to one server and can't pick out your games to slow them down.

Swatting and doxxing

Your IP can give away your rough location and your internet provider. Keeping it hidden from other players makes you much harder to track down.

Servers in other regions

Some games group players by region or release content in some countries first. Connect to a server in that region to play there, within the game's rules.

Ping and routing

A VPN adds a hop, so it won't lower your ping in general. Sometimes a server near the game server takes a better path than your ISP's default route. Test both ways.

Regional pricing

Game stores can show different prices in different countries. A VPN lets you see what a store shows elsewhere. Check the store's terms before buying that way.

Protocol

WireGuard by default, in every app

WireGuard is lean and modern, and carries your traffic over UDP, the same transport most online games use for real-time play. That keeps the overhead low. It also copes well with switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, so a phone or tablet stays protected as you move.

  • Kill switch
  • DNS leak protection
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • 31 locations in 28 countries
  • P2P allowed everywhere
  • No activity logs

PC and Mac

Install the app, connect to a server near you or near the game server, then launch your game. Works alongside Steam, Epic, Battle.net and any other launcher.

PlayStation, Xbox and Switch

Consoles can't run VPN apps. Set up a router with a configuration from your dashboard and every device behind it goes through the VPN. For open NAT or hosting, use a dedicated WireGuard server.

Mobile gaming

Protect mobile sessions on any network, public Wi-Fi included. WireGuard handles the move between Wi-Fi and mobile data, so protection doesn't drop mid-game.

FAQ

Gaming VPN questions

Will a VPN increase my ping?

Usually a little, because your traffic takes an extra hop through our server. WireGuard keeps that overhead low, and choosing a server close to you or to the game server keeps the detour short. Now and then the route through a VPN server is better than your ISP's own, but that depends on your connection, so try a match with and without it.

Which server should I connect to for gaming?

Start with the server closest to the game server you play on, not necessarily the one closest to you. If you're in the UK playing on EU servers hosted in Germany, try our Germany location. If that feels worse, try your nearest location instead and keep whichever plays better.

How does a VPN help against DDoS attacks?

Other players and services see the VPN server's IP address instead of yours. If someone can't find your real IP, they can't aim an attack at your home connection. Anything they send goes to our server instead.

Can I use PremierVPN on my games console?

Consoles can't run VPN apps. Set up a router with a configuration from your PremierVPN dashboard and every device behind it, including PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, goes through the VPN. For open NAT or hosting, a dedicated WireGuard server with port forwarding is the better fit.

Will I get banned for using a VPN?

Using a VPN for privacy and protection is normal, and most games don't object to it. Some publishers' terms do restrict using a VPN to change region, and using one to get around a ban can lead to further action. Check the rules for the games you play.

Can I host a game server through PremierVPN?

Yes, with a dedicated WireGuard server from $11.99/month. It has its own static IP address and unlimited port forwarding, so you can host Minecraft, Valheim or any other game server while your home IP stays hidden. It's set up within 24 hours.

Does it work with every online game?

PremierVPN works with online games in general. WireGuard carries UDP traffic, which is what most games use for real-time play, so there's no mismatch. A few games or anti-cheat systems restrict VPN connections, so if one won't connect, check that game's rules.

What about mobile gaming?

Our iPhone, iPad and Android apps use WireGuard by default, which copes well with switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Your protection carries on as you move between networks.
