Setup guide · Fire TV and Android TV · Version 3.0.0

Set up PremierVPN on Fire TV

Install the app, sign in with your PremierVPN account and press one button to connect. It takes a few minutes, most of it typing your email with the remote. This guide covers every screen and setting in the app.

  • Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube or a Fire TV Edition TV, on Fire OS 6 or later
  • Or an Android TV or Google TV device
  • A premiervpn.net account with an active plan

Plans aren't sold in the TV app

In-app purchasing isn't available in this version. Create your account and choose a plan on premiervpn.net, then sign in on the TV. Everything is done with the remote: the arrows, OK, Back and Play/Pause. If your account uses two-factor authentication, keep your authenticator app to hand.

1 Install

Install the app

Use the Amazon Appstore if you can: it's quickest and keeps the app up to date. If the Appstore isn't available in your country, or PremierVPN doesn't show up, install it straight from us with the Downloader app.

Amazon Appstore Recommended

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, go to Find and choose Search.
  2. Type PremierVPN and select the app from the results.
  3. Choose Get or Download. The app installs in a few seconds.
  4. Choose Open, or find PremierVPN later under Your Apps & Channels.

Or send it from a computer or phone: open PremierVPN on Amazon's website, choose your Fire TV under Deliver to and select Get App. It appears on the Fire TV shortly.

Tip

To keep PremierVPN on your home row, highlight it in Your Apps & Channels, press the menu button ☰ and choose Move.

Downloader app

Downloader is a free app that downloads and installs apps on Fire TV. You set it up once.

  1. In Find, search for Downloader and install it.
  2. Let it install apps: open Settings › My Fire TV › Developer options › Install unknown apps, and switch Downloader on. On some Fire TVs the setting is called Apps from Unknown Sources.
  3. Can't see Developer options? Go to Settings › My Fire TV › About and select your Fire TV's name (the first line) seven times, until it says you're a developer. Then go back one screen.
  4. Open Downloader, select the box at the top and enter the code 381583 or the address portal.premiervpn.net/downloads/firetv.apk. Then select Go.
  5. When the installer opens, select Install, then Open.
  6. Downloader offers to delete the file it downloaded. Select Delete: the app is installed, so you don't need it.

Direct download

The same app as an APK file, for Android TV and Google TV devices and for other sideloading tools. The SHA-256 checksum is on the Downloads page in the portal.

Fire TV Stick 4K Select or the newest Fire TV Stick HD?

These run Amazon's Vega OS, which can't install Android apps, so PremierVPN isn't available on them. To check, open Settings › My Fire TV › About: a software version starting with 1 is Vega OS. The very first Fire TV Sticks, on Fire OS 5, can't run it either.

2 Sign in

Sign in with your PremierVPN account

The first time you open the app it shows the Sign in screen. Use the email and password of your premiervpn.net account, the same login you use at portal.premiervpn.net. After that, PremierVPN remembers you and opens straight to Home.

  1. Email is highlighted. Press OK to open the on-screen keyboard and type your email address.
  2. Press the keyboard's Next key. Focus moves to Password. Press OK, type your password and press Done.
  3. Focus moves to the Sign in button. Press OK.
  4. If your account uses two-factor authentication, the screen changes to Verify it's you. Enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app and choose Verify.

What happens next

You're signed in and your plan is active. Carry on to Connect.
No active plan
The sign-in worked, but the account has no active plan. Activate or renew it on premiervpn.net, then choose Check again. Or choose Sign out and use a different account.
Enter your email and password.
One of the boxes is empty.
Enter the 6-digit code…
The two-factor code is missing or shorter than 6 digits.
A red error message
The email or password is wrong, or the code has expired. Check the details and try again.

Staying signed in

Your session stays signed in. If it expires, or you change your password on premiervpn.net, the app goes back to Sign in the next time it opens.

Used the Fire TV app before?

Earlier versions asked for your separate VPN username and password. Version 3.0 uses your account login instead, so there's nothing to look up.

Signed up with Google or Apple on our website?

Set a password first. Log in to the portal, open Settings and set one there.

3 Connect

Press one button to connect

Home opens with the large shield already highlighted, so connecting is one press.

  1. On Home, press OK on the shield. You can also press Play/Pause on any screen.
  2. The first time only, Fire OS shows a Connection request asking to allow PremierVPN to set up a VPN connection. Move to OK and press OK.
  3. The ring changes colour while the tunnel is set up, then the status shows you're connected.
  4. Underneath you'll see the location, WireGuard® and how long you've been connected. The chips show AES-256, Zero logs and your download speed right now.

Chose Cancel by mistake?

If you choose Cancel on the Connection request, nothing connects. Press OK on the shield again and Fire OS asks again.

To disconnect, press OK on the shield or Play/Pause.

4 Home and Quick connect

Your locations, one press away

Home has two parts: the connection status on the left and Quick connect on the right. Quick connect shows up to four locations, in this order:

  1. The location you're connected to, or the one picked for your next connection.
  2. Your recent locations, marked Recent.
  3. Your favourites, marked with a star.
  4. Locations in other countries, to fill the list.

Press → from the shield to move into the list, then OK on a location to connect to it. If you're already connected, the app switches server for you. All locations at the bottom opens the full list.

The top menu

Press ↑ to reach Home, Locations and Settings. Back from Locations or Settings takes you to Home. Back from Home leaves the app, and the VPN stays connected while you watch other apps.

5 Choose a location

Find the fastest server

Open Locations from the top menu. Every location is listed, grouped by region, and the card on the right shows details for the one you've highlighted.

All
Every location, grouped by region. If your account has a dedicated IP, its server comes first.
Fastest
Every location sorted by ping from your Fire TV, quickest first.
Favourites
Only the locations you've starred.
Dedicated IP
Your dedicated IP server or servers. This filter only appears if your account has a dedicated IP.
  1. Highlight a location with ↑ ↓ and press OK to connect to it.
  2. To add a favourite, highlight the location, press → to the card and choose Add to favourites. Favourites appear on Home and under the Favourites filter.
  3. Ping is shown in milliseconds on each row and on the card. Green is under 80 ms and amber is under 160 ms. A dash means the server didn't answer the test.

How ping is measured

Ping is measured from your Fire TV while you're disconnected, so it reflects your own line. While you're connected, the last results are shown.

Tip

Some locations are listed twice, once marked (Direct). If a location won't connect on your network, try its (Direct) version.

Open Settings from the top menu. Press OK on any switch to turn it on or off. The list scrolls as you move down.

Reconnect automatically
On by defaultBrings the VPN back if it drops, if it stops passing traffic, or after your Fire TV wakes from sleep. It tries three times before showing an error.
Connect when Fire TV starts
Off by defaultConnects to your last location after the Fire TV is restarted or switched on. It doesn't run when the TV simply wakes from sleep, and you need to have connected at least once.
Block ads and trackers
Off by defaultFilters ads, trackers and known malware sites in every app, using AdGuard DNS.
DNS leak protection
On by defaultMakes sure every DNS lookup goes through the encrypted tunnel.
Allow local network devices
Off by defaultLets the Fire TV reach devices on your home network while it's connected, such as Plex or Kodi servers, network drives and casting from your phone.
Apps that skip the VPN
None by defaultChoose apps that use your normal connection instead of the VPN. See the next step.

Reconnect to apply

Ad blocking, DNS leak protection, local network access and apps that skip the VPN take effect on the next connection. If you change one while connected, a Reconnect to apply card appears. Choose Reconnect now.

Signing out

Your account email and plan are shown on the right of Settings. Choose Sign out: PremierVPN disconnects and goes back to the Sign in screen. Your settings and favourites stay on the device.

7 Apps that skip the VPN

Let an app use your normal connection

Some apps refuse to work over a VPN, or you may want a particular app to use your home connection. Apps you choose here go outside the tunnel. Everything else stays protected.

  1. Go to Settings and choose Apps that skip the VPN.
  2. The list shows every app on your Fire TV. Highlight an app and press OK to switch it on. The line under its name changes to Skips the VPN.
  3. Repeat for any other apps. The card on the right shows how many apps skip the VPN.
  4. If you're connected, choose Reconnect now. Then choose Done, or press Back.

These apps aren't protected

Apps that skip the VPN show your real IP address and aren't encrypted by PremierVPN. Only add apps you're happy to use without protection.

Installed from the Amazon Appstore? Updates arrive by themselves.

Installed with Downloader or the APK? Install the new version the same way, over the top of the old one. Your sign-in and settings stay as they are.

Troubleshooting

If something isn't working

PremierVPN isn't in the Appstore on my Fire TV

The Appstore isn't available in every country. Install it with the Downloader app instead.

If your Fire TV runs Vega OS (Fire TV Stick 4K Select, newest Fire TV Stick HD) or Fire OS 5 (the first Fire TV Sticks), PremierVPN can't run on it. Check under Settings › My Fire TV › About.

Downloader won't install it, or says "App not installed"
  1. Check Downloader is allowed to install apps: Settings › My Fire TV › Developer options › Install unknown apps.
  2. Make sure there's free space: Settings › My Fire TV › About › Storage shows how much is left.
  3. If PremierVPN is already installed from somewhere else, uninstall it first (Manage installed applications › PremierVPN › Uninstall), then install again.
Sign in fails

Check your email and password by signing in at portal.premiervpn.net. Use your account login, not a VPN username. If you've forgotten the password, reset it here. If you signed up with Google or Apple, set a password in the portal's Settings first.

If two-factor authentication is on, make sure your Fire TV's clock is right and use a fresh code.

It says "No active plan"

Activate or renew your plan on your dashboard, then choose Check again on the TV.

Nothing happens when I press Connect

You may have chosen Cancel on the Connection request. Press OK on the shield again and choose OK on the request.

Error: the server didn't answer

Choose Try again. If it keeps happening, choose Pick another server, or open Locations › Fastest and choose one near the top.

Streaming is slow or buffers

Open Locations, choose Fastest and connect to a location near the top of the list. If your Fire TV is on Wi-Fi, a 5 GHz network or an Ethernet adapter helps a lot with streaming.

An app won't load while I'm connected

Add it under Apps that skip the VPN, then choose Reconnect now. It then uses your normal connection.

Plex, Kodi or casting can't find my devices

Turn on Allow local network devices in Settings, then choose Reconnect now.

Ads still appear after turning on blocking

Choose Reconnect now so the setting takes effect. Some apps show ads from the same servers as their programmes, and DNS blocking can't remove those.

The VPN is off after a restart

Turn on Connect when Fire TV starts in Settings and connect once yourself. After a restart it connects to your last location about a minute after the Fire TV starts up.

How do I check it's working?

The status on Home shows you're connected, with the location underneath. To double-check, open a web browser on the Fire TV, such as Amazon Silk, and go to premiervpn.net/ip-leak-test. It should show the location you picked, not your own.

Still stuck?

Email [email protected] or open a ticket. Tell us your Fire TV model, the app version (under Settings) and the message on screen, and our UK-based team will take it from there. The Help Centre has more guides.
