The internet is different away from home
Hotel Wi-Fi
Hotel networks are shared by every guest and a common place for man-in-the-middle attacks, where someone intercepts logins and personal details.
Airport and café Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi at airports, cafés and stations is often unencrypted. Anyone on the same network may be able to see your traffic.
Home services abroad
Streaming, news sites and banking apps can block you or behave differently abroad. A VPN connects you back to your home country.
Censorship
Some countries restrict social media, messaging apps and news sites. A VPN with the right protocol gets you past those blocks.
When the network blocks VPNs
Some countries block VPNs themselves, not just websites. PremierVPN's anti-censorship protocols are built for those networks, and they're in the same apps on every plan.
- Auto mode on iPhone and iPad tries WireGuard, AmneziaWG, REALITY, xHTTP, CDN and Stealth relay, and keeps the first that works
- Bypass mode on Windows does the same with AmneziaWG, Cloak and VLESS
- DNS tunnels in the free SlipNet app for Android
- NaiveProxy on iOS and Android
What you can do with PremierVPN abroad
Reach home services
Connect to a server in your home country to use your usual region-locked services as you would at home, where their terms allow it.
Bank safely
Log in to your bank from abroad without your details crossing an untrusted network in the clear.
Keep messaging
WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and other messaging apps are blocked in some countries. A VPN gets you past those blocks so you can stay in touch.
Read news from home
Reach your home country's news sites even where they're restricted to readers inside the country.
Protect your identity
Hide your real IP address and encrypt your traffic, making tracking by local networks, ISPs and anyone sharing the Wi-Fi much harder.
Compare prices
Airlines, hotels and booking sites sometimes show different prices by location. Connect from different countries to compare.
Connect home, from wherever you are
Unlimited bandwidth and every location on every plan, including:
- United Kingdom
- United States
- Germany
- France
- Spain
- Japan
- Australia
- Canada
- Singapore
- Netherlands
- Italy
- Brazil
Set up before you travel
Some countries block VPN websites and app stores, so the time to install is while you're still at home.
At home
Install PremierVPN on every device you're taking, sign in and test a connection. Turn on the kill switch so nothing leaks if the VPN drops.
On public Wi-Fi
Connect before you open anything. Turn on auto-connect so the VPN starts by itself whenever you join a new network.
When you arrive
Connect home for banking. If ordinary connections are blocked, use Auto mode on iPhone and iPad or Bypass mode on Windows.

Travel VPN questions
Is it legal to use a VPN while travelling?
In most countries, yes. VPN use is legal across Europe, North America and much of the rest of the world. A small number of countries restrict or regulate VPNs, including China, Russia, the UAE and Iran, so check the local rules before you go.
Will a VPN slow down hotel Wi-Fi?
WireGuard adds little overhead, so if the hotel Wi-Fi is already slow, the VPN won't make it noticeably worse. On an open network the protection is worth it. Pick a server close to where you are for the best speed, or one at home when you need a home address.
Can I use PremierVPN in China?
China blocks many VPN protocols. On iPhone and iPad, Auto mode tries our anti-censorship protocols, including VLESS with REALITY, xHTTP and CDN, and Stealth relay, and keeps the first that works. On Windows, Bypass mode does the same. They may work where ordinary VPNs don't, but nothing is guaranteed on a network that actively blocks VPNs. Install the app and sign in before you travel, as VPN websites and app stores are often blocked there.
Should I set it up before I travel?
Yes. Some countries block VPN websites and app stores, so install PremierVPN on every device, sign in and test it while you're still at home. Turn on the kill switch while you're at it.
Which devices should I protect while travelling?
All of them. Your phone, laptop and tablet are all exposed on public Wi-Fi. PremierVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android, Linux and Fire TV, and covers 5 devices at once on Personal VPN or 10 on Premium VPN.
Can I use my bank while abroad?
Yes. Connect to a server in your home country before you log in. That makes the login look like it comes from home, so your bank is less likely to flag it as unusual, and it encrypts your banking details on whatever network you're on.
