Connect Using IKEv2 on iPhone and iPad

Updated 4 Oct 2026 3 min read

iPhone and iPad have a built-in IKEv2 VPN client, so you can connect to PremierVPN without installing an app. This guide shows you how to add the configuration and connect.

Want more features? The PremierVPN app for iPhone and iPad picks the best protocol automatically, works on networks that block VPNs, and signs in with your portal email and password.

Before you start: use your VPN credentials

Manual setups sign in with your VPN username and VPN password. These are separate from the email and password you use for the portal and the PremierVPN apps, and the portal login will not work here.

  • Find both on your Dashboard under Your VPN credentials. Click Show to reveal the password.
  • To change the VPN password, go to Settings › VPN Password. The new password applies from your next connection.
  • Not sure which login is which? See Understanding your VPN credentials.

Add the VPN configuration

  1. Open Settings › General › VPN & Device Management › VPN.
  2. Tap Add VPN Configuration.
  3. Tap Type and choose IKEv2.
  4. Fill in:
    • Description: any name, for example PremierVPN UK
    • Server: a hostname from the table below, for example uk.premiervpn.net
    • Remote ID: the same hostname, for example uk.premiervpn.net
    • Local ID: leave blank
  5. Set User Authentication to Username, then enter your VPN username and VPN password.
  6. Tap Done.

Connect and disconnect

  1. Go to Settings › General › VPN & Device Management › VPN and tick your PremierVPN configuration.
  2. Turn on the Status switch. Once a VPN is set up, you can also use the VPN switch near the top of the main Settings screen.
  3. The VPN icon appears in the status bar when you're connected.

Turn the switch off to disconnect.

Add more locations

Repeat the steps with a different hostname for each location you want, then tick the one to use before connecting. You can also copy any hostname from the Servers page in the portal.

The Server and Remote ID must be the same hostname.

Troubleshooting

It won't connect

  • Check that Server and Remote ID are identical and spelled correctly.
  • IKEv2 uses UDP ports 500 and 4500. Some public Wi-Fi, office and school networks block them. Try mobile data or another network, or use Cisco Secure Client (port 443) or the PremierVPN app.

"User authentication failed"

Use your VPN username and VPN password from the Dashboard, not your portal email and password. If you changed your VPN password, tap the i next to the configuration and update it.

Can it connect automatically?

Configurations you add by hand in Settings normally don't have an option to connect automatically. If you want the VPN to connect on its own, use the PremierVPN app.

Does IKEv2 reconnect when I switch networks?

IKEv2 supports MOBIKE, which helps the connection carry on when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
