Your PremierVPN account has two separate logins: your portal login and your VPN credentials. This article explains which one to use where, where to find them, and how to change them.
The two logins at a glance
| Portal login | VPN credentials | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your account email and portal password (you can also sign in to the portal with Google or Apple) | A VPN username and VPN password created for your plan |
| Use it for | portal.premiervpn.net and the PremierVPN apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux | Third-party apps and manual set-ups: IKEv2, OpenConnect (AnyConnect or Cisco Secure Client), OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration files, routers |
| Where to find it | You chose the password when you signed up or set it in Settings | Dashboard › Your VPN credentials (click Show for the password) |
| Where to change it | Settings › Portal Password | Settings › VPN Password |
The two are independent. Changing your portal password doesn't change your VPN password, and the other way round.
Portal login: for the portal and our apps
Sign in to the PremierVPN apps with the same email and password you use at portal.premiervpn.net. If two-factor authentication is on, the app asks for your 6-digit code too.
Signed up with Google or Apple? Your account doesn't have a password yet, and the apps need one. Sign in to the portal with Google or Apple, go to Settings › Portal Password, enter a new password twice and click Set Portal Password. Signing in with Google or Apple later never changes this password.
Two exceptions:
- The Windows app has an optional Use VPN credentials directly box on its sign-in screen. It's useful if our website can't be reached, but your account details and some features aren't available in that mode.
- The Fire TV app signs in with your VPN username and VPN password.
VPN credentials: for third-party apps and manual set-ups
Your VPN username and VPN password are created when your plan is activated. Use them when you set up a connection without our apps, for example:
- IKEv2, built into Windows, macOS and iOS, or with strongSwan on Android and Linux
- OpenConnect or Cisco Secure Client (AnyConnect)
- OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration files, including on routers
You can find your VPN username in three places: on the Dashboard under Your VPN credentials, at the top of the VPN Password section in Settings, and in the iPhone and iPad app under Settings › Account & plan. The password is only shown on the Dashboard.
Change your VPN password
- Go to Settings and scroll to VPN Password.
- Enter your Portal password to confirm it's you.
- Enter your new VPN password in New VPN password and again in Confirm new VPN password.
- Click Change VPN Password.
Your VPN password must be 8 to 64 characters and can only contain letters, numbers and these symbols: ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - =
The new password works from your next VPN connection. Update it in any third-party app or router that uses it.
Use a different password from your portal password. If you signed in with Google or Apple in the last 30 minutes, you won't be asked for your portal password. If you don't have a portal password at all yet, set one first under Portal Password.
Change your portal password
Go to Settings › Portal Password, enter your current password, then your new password twice, and click Change Portal Password. It needs at least 8 characters, with upper and lower case letters, a number and a symbol. Use the new password next time you sign in to the apps. If you've forgotten it, sign out and use Forgot password? on the sign-in page. See How to Log In to the PremierVPN Client Portal.
Common mix-ups
The app says my login is wrong
Our apps (apart from Fire TV) need your portal email and password, not your VPN username. Check you can sign in at portal.premiervpn.net with the same details.
My third-party app says authentication failed
Third-party apps need your VPN username and VPN password from the Dashboard, not your email. If you recently changed your VPN password, update it in the app.
I don't see VPN credentials on my Dashboard
They appear once your plan is active. If your plan is active and they're still missing, contact support.
