Many ASUS routers, including the ROG Rapture range, can connect to PremierVPN with OpenVPN so the devices on your network use the VPN without any app. This guide uses the router's VPN client, called VPN Fusion on most current ASUS firmware.
Use VPN Fusion (or VPN Client), not VPN Server. VPN Server lets other people connect into your router. It can't connect out to PremierVPN.
Before you start: use your VPN credentials
Manual setups sign in with your VPN username and VPN password. These are separate from the email and password you use for the portal and the PremierVPN apps, and the portal login will not work here.
- Find both on your Dashboard under Your VPN credentials. Click Show to reveal the password.
- To change the VPN password, go to Settings › VPN Password. The new password applies from your next connection.
- Not sure which login is which? See Understanding your VPN credentials.
Step 1: Download an OpenVPN config
- Sign in to the portal and open Servers.
- Find the location you want and click UDP to download its
.ovpnfile (for examplePremierVPN-UK-UDP.ovpn). Use TCP only if UDP won't connect. - Save the file on the computer you use to manage the router.
Have a dedicated IP? Use the OpenVPN config generator on the same page: pick your IP, choose UDP or TCP, and click Download .ovpn.
Step 2: Open VPN Fusion
- Sign in to your router's admin page.
- Click VPN in the left-hand menu and open the VPN Fusion tab. On some models or firmware versions this tab is called VPN Client.
- Click Add profile (the + button).
Step 3: Add the OpenVPN profile
- Choose the OpenVPN tab in the dialog.
- Fill in:
- Description: any name, for example
PremierVPN UK - Username and Password: your VPN username and VPN password from the Dashboard, not your portal email and password
- Description: any name, for example
- Use the import option (Import .ovpn file or Browse, depending on firmware) to upload the file from Step 1. Wait for the upload to confirm.
- Click OK to save the profile.
Step 4: Connect
- Find the new profile in the server or profile list on the VPN Fusion page.
- Turn it on (or click Activate on older firmware).
- Wait for the status to show it's connected.
Step 5: Check it works
From a device connected to the router, open the IP leak test. It should show the PremierVPN server's location, not your home IP.
Choose which devices use the VPN
VPN Fusion can send all devices through the VPN or only the devices you pick. After connecting, review the VPN Fusion device settings (often called the exception list or default connection) and choose which devices use the PremierVPN profile.
Troubleshooting
Authentication fails
Use your VPN username and VPN password from the Dashboard, not your portal login. Check for typos or trailing spaces. If you changed your VPN password in Settings › VPN Password, update the profile.
The connection won't start
Try the TCP config. UDP uses port 1194 and TCP uses port 443, which gets through more restrictive networks.
It connects then drops, or shows certificate errors
Check the router's date, time and time zone are correct. A wrong clock breaks the certificate check and stops the tunnel forming.
One location is slow or won't connect
Download and import a config for a different location to rule out a single server.
The router won't accept the .ovpn file
Update the router to the latest firmware and try again. Older firmware can have an outdated OpenVPN client. If it still fails, open a ticket with your router model and firmware version and we'll help.
Still stuck? Open a support ticket and tell us your router model, firmware version and the server you're trying to use.
