Connect Using OpenConnect on Windows

Updated 4 Oct 2026 3 min read

This guide shows you how to connect a Windows PC to PremierVPN with OpenConnect GUI, a free open-source client that works with AnyConnect servers. It connects over port 443, so it often works on networks that block other VPN types.

Want the quickest setup? The PremierVPN app for Windows signs in with your portal email and password and includes a kill switch and Bypass mode for restrictive networks. If you don't want to install anything, Windows also has built-in IKEv2: see Connect using IKEv2 on Windows.

Before you start: use your VPN credentials

Manual setups sign in with your VPN username and VPN password. These are separate from the email and password you use for the portal and the PremierVPN apps, and the portal login will not work here.

  • Find both on your Dashboard under Your VPN credentials. Click Show to reveal the password.
  • To change the VPN password, go to Settings › VPN Password. The new password applies from your next connection.
  • Not sure which login is which? See Understanding your VPN credentials.

Install OpenConnect GUI

  1. Download the latest Windows installer from the OpenConnect GUI project page: gitlab.com/openconnect/openconnect-gui.
  2. Run the installer and follow the prompts.
  3. Open OpenConnect GUI from the Start menu.

Cisco's own Secure Client for Windows is normally only available through an organisation's Cisco licence, which is why we recommend OpenConnect GUI.

Create a profile

  1. Create a new profile (from the File menu or the profile edit button, depending on your version).
  2. Fill in:
    • Name: any label, for example PremierVPN UK
    • Gateway: a hostname from the table below, for example uk.premiervpn.net
  3. Save the profile.

Connect

  1. Choose your profile from the server list.
  2. Click Connect.
  3. Enter your VPN username and VPN password when asked.
  4. The status changes to connected and the tray icon shows the VPN is active.

To disconnect, click Disconnect in OpenConnect GUI.

Server hostnames

Create one profile per location, or edit the gateway to switch. You can also copy any hostname from the Servers page in the portal.

Troubleshooting

Do I need to add the port?

No. The client uses port 443 by default. If a field asks for a port, enter 443.

Login failed or credentials rejected

  • Use your VPN username and VPN password from the Dashboard, not your portal email and password.
  • If you changed your VPN password recently, enter the new one.

Certificate warning

Our servers use a publicly trusted certificate, so you shouldn't need to accept one manually. Check the gateway is typed exactly as shown in the table. If the warning still appears, don't accept it: open a support ticket and tell us which hostname you used.

Still stuck? Open a support ticket and tell us your device, app version and what you've tried.
