PremierVPN for Linux: Features and Overview

PremierVPN for Linux is a native desktop app with a full graphical interface, so you don't need the terminal once it's installed. It connects with WireGuard® and has a kill switch. This article covers which distributions it supports, how to install it, and what it can do.

Supported systems

Package	Distributions
`.deb`	Ubuntu 20.04 or later, Debian 11 or later, and other Debian-based distributions
`.rpm`	Fedora 38 or later; RHEL, Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux 9 or later; openSUSE Leap 15.5 or later and Tumbleweed

You also need a 64-bit system with a graphical desktop (GNOME, KDE, XFCE or similar), Linux kernel 5.6 or later for built-in WireGuard, and a PremierVPN account with an active plan.

Install on Ubuntu or Debian

Download the .deb package from your Downloads page.

Open a terminal and run:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./premiervpn_*.deb

This installs PremierVPN and everything it needs.

Install on Fedora, RHEL, Rocky, Alma or openSUSE

Download the .rpm package from your Downloads page.

On Fedora, run:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo dnf install ./premiervpn-*.rpm

RHEL, Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux need the EPEL repository first, and openSUSE uses zypper. Step-by-step commands are in Install PremierVPN on Fedora / Red Hat (RPM).

Open and sign in

Open PremierVPN from your application menu, or run premiervpn in a terminal.
Sign in with your portal email and password, the same login you use at portal.premiervpn.net. If two-factor authentication is on, enter the 6-digit code.
Click Connect next to a server, or click the power button. It turns green when you're connected.

Signed up with Google or Apple on our website? The app needs a password. Sign in to the portal, go to Settings › Portal Password and set one first.

Kill switch: blocks traffic if the VPN drops, so nothing leaks
DNS leak protection and an optional ad blocker
Server list with search, tabs (including Favourites and Dedicated for your dedicated IPs) and a star to save favourites
Live bandwidth graph, session totals and your current public IP
Speed test, ping test and connection logs in the sidebar

Update or uninstall

To update, download the latest package and install it the same way. It upgrades in place and keeps your settings.

To uninstall on Ubuntu or Debian:

sudo apt remove premiervpn

To uninstall on Fedora, RHEL, Rocky or Alma:

sudo dnf remove premiervpn

Quick troubleshooting

App won't open or can't connect: restart the background service, then reopen the app:
```
sudo systemctl restart premiervpn-service
```
Check the service is running:
```
sudo systemctl status premiervpn-service
```
You should see "active (running)".
Login rejected: use your portal email and password, not your VPN username.

Logs for support:

sudo journalctl -u premiervpn-service -n 100

Other ways to connect on Linux

You can also connect without the app using your VPN credentials: IKEv2 with strongSwan or OpenConnect. These are handy on servers without a desktop.
