PremierVPN for macOS: Features and Overview

Updated 4 Oct 2026 3 min read

PremierVPN for macOS is a native Mac app for Apple silicon and Intel Macs. This article covers how to get it, how to sign in, what's in the current version, and what the new version adds.

What you need

  • macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, on an Apple silicon or Intel Mac
  • A PremierVPN account with an active plan

Download and sign in

  1. Open Downloads in the portal and click the App Store button for macOS, then click Get in the Mac App Store.
  2. Open PremierVPN from Launchpad, Spotlight or your Applications folder.
  3. Sign in with your portal email and password, the same login you use at portal.premiervpn.net. If two-factor authentication is on, enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app.
  4. When macOS asks to add a VPN configuration, click Allow and confirm with your Mac password or Touch ID. You only need to do this once.
  5. Choose a location and click Connect. You can also double-click a location to connect straight away.
Signed up with Google or Apple? The app needs a password. Sign in to the portal, go to Settings › Portal Password and set one first.

New version: more ways to connect

The latest version adds the same protocols as the iPhone and iPad app:

  • Auto: tries WireGuard®, then AmneziaWG, REALITY, xHTTP, CDN and Stealth relay, keeps the first that works, and remembers what worked on each network
  • WireGuard®: the fastest choice for everyday use
  • AmneziaWG: WireGuard tuned for networks that interrupt standard VPN connections
  • VLESS with REALITY, xHTTP or CDN: for networks with strict traffic policies
  • Stealth relay: WireGuard inside an encrypted TLS connection

It's rolling out now. If you don't see these options yet, update the app using the Mac link on your Downloads page.

Features in the current version

  • WireGuard® as the main protocol, with optional Stealth Mode in Settings for networks that block or slow down VPN connections
  • A kill switch, DNS leak protection and an optional ad blocker, with their status in the Security panel
  • Server tabs and search, with a star to save favourites
  • Live bandwidth, session data and uptime on the main screen
  • Speed test, ping test and connection logs in the sidebar
  • Switch locations while connected

Quick troubleshooting

  • Won't connect: check your internet works without the VPN, try another location, then turn on Stealth Mode (or use Auto in the new version). Check System Settings › VPN to make sure PremierVPN's configuration is there and enabled.
  • No internet after disconnecting: the kill switch may still be active. Connect again, then disconnect with the app's Disconnect button. If that doesn't help, turn the kill switch off, disconnect, then turn it back on.
  • The "Allow VPN" prompt didn't appear: check System Settings › VPN. If PremierVPN isn't listed, remove and reinstall the app, and the prompt appears again on first launch.
  • Login rejected: use your portal email and password, not your VPN username.
