PremierVPN for Android: Features and Overview

Updated 4 Oct 2026 3 min read

PremierVPN for Android works on Android phones, tablets and Android TV. This article covers how to get the app, how to sign in, what's in the current version, and what the new version adds.

What you need

  • Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later
  • A PremierVPN account with an active plan

Download and sign in

  1. Install PremierVPN from Google Play. Use the Google Play button on your Downloads page, or search for "PremierVPN" and look for PremierVPN: Fast & Secure VPN by JSR CREATE Limited.
  2. Open the app and sign in with your portal email and password, the same login you use at portal.premiervpn.net. If two-factor authentication is on, enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app.
  3. Tap the shield button to connect. When Android asks "Allow PremierVPN to set up a VPN connection?", tap OK. A key icon in the status bar shows the VPN is on.
Signed up with Google or Apple on our website? The app needs a password. Sign in to the portal, go to Settings › Portal Password and set one first.

New version: more ways to connect

The latest version adds the same protocols as the iPhone and iPad app:

  • Auto: tries WireGuard®, then AmneziaWG, REALITY, xHTTP, CDN and Stealth relay, keeps the first that works, and remembers what worked on each network
  • WireGuard®: the fastest choice for everyday use
  • AmneziaWG: WireGuard tuned for networks that interrupt standard VPN connections
  • VLESS with REALITY, xHTTP or CDN: for networks with strict traffic policies
  • Stealth relay: WireGuard inside an encrypted TLS connection

It's rolling out now. If you don't see these options yet, update the app from Google Play.

Features in the current version

  • WireGuard® with automatic reconnection when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data
  • Kill switch using Android's Always-on VPN (see below)
  • Split tunnelling: choose apps that skip the VPN in Settings › Split Tunnel. Changes apply when you next connect.
  • Auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi: the VPN starts on networks that aren't in your trusted list. Add your home and work Wi-Fi as trusted.
  • Ad blocker: blocks ads and trackers using AdGuard DNS while you're connected
  • Server bookmarks: tap the bookmark icon to save a server to the Bookmarked tab
  • Speed test, ping test and live bandwidth
  • Home screen widget: long-press your home screen, tap Widgets and add PremierVPN Status

Turn on the kill switch

  1. In the app, go to Settings › Always-on VPN & Kill Switch. This opens Android's own VPN settings.
  2. Tap the gear icon next to PremierVPN.
  3. Turn on Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN.

Android TV

Install PremierVPN from the Play Store on your TV and sign in with your portal email and password using the remote. Use the arrow keys to move between the sidebar and the main area, and press OK on the large circle button to connect or disconnect. For always-on protection, use Settings › Always-on VPN & Kill Switch.

Using an Amazon Fire TV device? It has its own app: see Set up PremierVPN on Fire TV.

Quick troubleshooting

  • Can't connect: check your internet works without the VPN, try another location, and make sure you allowed the VPN connection request. On networks that block VPNs, update to the latest version and use Auto.
  • Drops often: turn on Auto-Reconnect in Settings and try a server closer to you.
  • Asked for VPN permission again: this happens if you've used another VPN app since. Tap OK.
  • Split tunnel changes not working: disconnect and reconnect.
  • Widget not updating: remove and re-add it, and set PremierVPN to Unrestricted in Android Settings › Battery.
  • No servers showing: pull down on the list to refresh.
  • Login rejected: use your portal email and password, not your VPN username. Tap Forgot password? on the login screen to reset it.

Prefer another app? You can also connect with IKEv2 using strongSwan, or with Cisco Secure Client (AnyConnect), using your VPN credentials. See IKEv2 on Android and AnyConnect on Android. Full guide: Set up PremierVPN on Android.
