Once you've found DNS resolvers that work on your network, you need to tell SlipNet to use them. This article shows how, and what format to use.
Why you need this
SlipNet's DNS tunnel protocols (VayDNS, NoizDNS, DNSTT and Slipstream) send your traffic through DNS resolvers. If SlipNet uses resolvers that your ISP blocks, the connection times out. Setting your own working resolvers fixes this. It's essential in Iran.
First find some working resolvers: see How to Find Working DNS Resolvers. In Iran, use only resolvers marked E2E Passed in SlipNet's scanner.
How to set your resolvers
- Open the SlipNet app and go to Settings.
- In the DNS section, turn on Global DNS Override. This makes every profile use the resolvers you enter.
- Enter your working resolvers, separated by commas.
- Tap Save.
- Disconnect and connect again so the change takes effect.
Format
Enter each resolver as its IP address, a colon and the port. The usual DNS port is 53. For example:
203.0.113.10:53, 198.51.100.20:53, 192.0.2.30:53
These are example addresses only. Use the ones that worked in your scan. Add two or three so the tunnel has a fallback if one fails.
Copy resolvers exactly. A missing colon, a missing port or an extra space can stop the tunnel from starting.
When to update your resolvers
- A connection that worked before now times out.
- You've moved to a different network, for example from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
- Pages load very slowly or the connection keeps dropping.
In each case, run the scanner again and replace the old resolvers with new working ones.
