SlipNet is our set of anti-censorship tunnels for networks that block normal VPN connections, such as those in Iran, China and Russia. This article explains what it is, when to use it and how to get it.
What SlipNet does
Government filtering systems use deep packet inspection (DPI) to spot and block VPN traffic. WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 all have recognisable patterns, so they are often blocked in heavily censored countries.
SlipNet hides your traffic inside things the filters have to let through:
- DNS tunnelling: your traffic travels inside ordinary-looking DNS lookups. DNS is needed for almost everything online, so it is very hard to block completely. See How DNS Tunnelling Works.
- HTTPS disguise: your traffic looks like normal secure web browsing to a real website.
SlipNet gives you six protocols that use these techniques in different ways: VayDNS, NoizDNS, DNSTT, Slipstream, NaiveProxy and StunTLS. If one is blocked on your network, you can switch to another. See Understanding the 6 SlipNet Protocols.
No tool works on every network all the time. Filtering changes often, so keep more than one option set up.
When to use SlipNet
SlipNet is the most resilient option, but DNS tunnelling is also the slowest. Try the faster options first and move down the list only if they are blocked:
- The PremierVPN app. The main PremierVPN apps now include VLESS (REALITY, xHTTP and CDN) and AmneziaWG, which are built for restrictive networks. On iPhone and iPad, leave the protocol on Auto and the app tries them for you. On Windows, use Bypass mode, which tries AmneziaWG, then Cloak, then VLESS. The latest Android and macOS versions add the same protocols as iOS. They're rolling out now. If you don't see these options yet, update the app from Google Play or the Mac download.
- VLESS in a third-party app. In the portal, go to Anti-Censorship › VLESS + REALITY and import your Subscription URL into an app such as v2rayNG, NekoBox, Sing-Box or V2Box. The same page has CDN-fronted VLESS links for networks that block our server addresses.
- StormDNS. A DNS-tunnel VPN for heavy censorship. Go to Anti-Censorship › StormDNS.
- SlipNet. The last resort when everything else is blocked. Go to Anti-Censorship › SlipNet.
Who can use SlipNet
SlipNet is included with every PremierVPN VPN plan at no extra cost. You need an active subscription. If your subscription is suspended for an unpaid invoice, SlipNet is paused and comes back automatically once the invoice is paid.
Supported devices
- Android: all six protocols, using the free SlipNet app.
- iPhone and iPad: NaiveProxy only, using the Shadowrocket app from the App Store. For other options on iOS, use the PremierVPN app or our PremierNexus app for StormDNS.
Get started
- Sign in to the portal and go to Anti-Censorship › SlipNet.
- Click Activate on one of the listed servers. Each server shows the protocols it supports.
- Follow the guide for your device:
