Which Protocol Should I Use?

Updated 4 Oct 2026 2 min read

SlipNet gives you six protocols. This guide helps you pick the right one for your situation, and what to try next if it doesn't work.

Quick recommendation

Start with VayDNS (socks). If it doesn't connect, try NoizDNS (socks). Based on recent feedback from users in Iran, these two are currently the most reliable, and the SlipNet page marks them as recommended. If neither works, try Slipstream or DNSTT.

In Iran, scan for working resolvers before you try any DNS protocol. Most failed connections there are caused by blocked resolvers, not by the protocol. See How to Find Working DNS Resolvers.

Decision guide

First time connecting

Import VayDNS (socks) and NoizDNS (socks) and try VayDNS first. Import DNSTT (socks) too as a fallback.

VayDNS and NoizDNS won't connect

Try DNSTT, then Slipstream. If you have several VayDNS links with different record types, try another record type as well.

Connected, but it's slow

Try Slipstream. It's the fastest DNS tunnel, though easier to detect. If HTTPS isn't blocked on your network, NaiveProxy is faster still.

All DNS protocols are blocked

Try NaiveProxy. It uses HTTPS on port 443 instead of DNS, so it can work when DNS tunnels are blocked. Your traffic looks like normal web browsing.

DNS is filtered by local resolvers

Try StunTLS. It connects straight to the server's IP address and doesn't need DNS.

You're on iPhone or iPad

SlipNet's only iOS option is NaiveProxy through the Shadowrocket app. Before setting that up, try these, which are simpler on iOS:

For NaiveProxy, see Setting Up NaiveProxy on iOS with Shadowrocket.

socks or ssh?

Each connection link on the SlipNet page is labelled socks or ssh. Start with socks. If a socks link connects but nothing loads, try the ssh link for the same protocol. It routes traffic differently and sometimes works when socks doesn't.

Import several protocols

Import at least three or four links into SlipNet, for example VayDNS, NoizDNS, DNSTT and Slipstream. If one stops working you can switch straight away, without needing to reach the portal. This matters when filtering suddenly gets stricter.

For more on how each protocol works, see Understanding the 6 SlipNet Protocols.
